Dream Rift: Mark Rautenbach; artist
statement, August 2017
The Surrealists gave us license and
tools to explore our reality, inner dimensions and dreams; our psychology. They
pioneered and formed new pictorial devices. The picture plane becomes a space in
which distinctions between right and wrong, up/down, in front of/behind,
inside/outside are discarded. Irrationality, the absurd, paradox and
contradiction, the language and textures of dreams, are unleashed. The
figurative, myth, metaphor, symbol, mystery become weightier and more tangible
than the actual.
