Eduplation performance @ David Krut Projects 7 July 2016

District Six Museum, Cape Town:
‘Print Exchange commemorating 50 years since the declaration of District Six’
Theme: Leaving District Six: remembering 60 000 forced goodbyes.
Project description:
The vision of the District Six project is to invite 50 South African and international participants to produce new work (original graphic artwork irrespective of graphic technique or process, on a 2-dimensional surface, preferably paper) or in the form of a high resolution digital image. The collection will be of a high standard to recognise the inherent value and importance of the District Six 50th Commemoration. The boxed collection will be collated into a set of limited editions of authenticated prints or art works for the participants, for the exhibition, and for educational purposes in support of the project. The project is likely to be a crucial contribution to a future which embraces our cultural backgrounds and heritage through art.
Objectives:
These artworks will be photographed for the e-catalogue and possibly a printed catalogue. Digital reproductions will also be used for educational purposes, workshops and community outreach programmes.
Outcomes:
District Six Museum teacher, youth and public education program which will consist of sharing art with schools and the general public. It could include master classes with young artists and art educators, and will provide a platform for participating printmakers to share their techniques as well as their inspirations. Exhibited as part of the exhibitions advocacy program in which skills in exhibition-making (research, visual literacy, display techniques, etc) will be presented in workshop format. Tangible report back to major donors; Promoting the participation of all artists and providing a platform for the promotion of their future work; Contribute to SA’s cultural heritage enabling the collection and the content of the collection being available to future generations.

My contribution is called:
Eduplation

The matter
Education documents [collected over a number of years of teaching/learning at Cape Technikon/Cape Peninsula University of Technology] fashioned into yarn, knitting 200 stitches over 300 rows [60 000 stitches] on needles fashioned from material found on the site of the 1960’s displacement. The stitches represent the 60 000 displaced people. Knitted into 297mm x 420mm x 55 pieces.

The Performance @ David Krut Projects
Invites the viewer to sit with the matter and asks; does institutionalised education continue to displace people?http://davidkrutprojects.com/41094/eduplation-a-one-off-performance-by-mark-rautenbach
